Augustus Saint-Gaudens plaque, 1882
Scope and Contents
Plaster relief, 51 by 25.5 cm. Golden brown patina. Signed Augustus Saint-Gaudens, dated New York February MDCCCLXXXII and inscribed "To my fried Dr. Henry Schiff this portrait of my son Homer Schiff Saint-Gaudens at the age of seventeen months."
Dr. Henry Schiff was Saint-Gaudens’ mentor and confidant when the sculptor lived in Paris. Saint-Gaudens named his son Homer Schiff Saint-Gaudens in honor of their friendship.
Inscription at the bottom of the plaster is etched "To my friend CES Wood; Augs St Gaudens New York February 21/84"
The plaster is broken into three pieces; one at the mid-point, and a third section of the bottom left corner.
