Biographical Note

Dr. Mary Thompson (1825-1919) was the first female physician in Portland, Oregon. Born in New York City, she studied medicine privately with two doctors in LaSalle, Illinois and was the first woman to practice medicine in Iowa and Illinois as well. She took a leading part in the campaign for women's suffrage and other human rights issues.
